A-levels at St John's International School
Following on from I/GCSE courses in years 10 and 11. Students who wish to study in overseas universities (and now also some courses at the better Thai Universities) need to continue their education into years 12 and 13 to study A levels.

The A Level
The A level award is split into two distinct sections; in year 12 students study the AS award and this is followed in year 13 with the A2 award in the same subject. Together, years 12 and 13 make up the full A level. Students are expected to achieve a minimum of grade C at I/GCSE before starting an AS in that subject.

The curriculum follows the syllabuses of the two exam boards we use (Cambridge and Edexcel, the same as for I/GCSE). During the two years students study optional subjects which are shown below in the option blocks. Students must also study Thai Language and PE in both years. Supplementary English courses and University guidance are also studied.

Subjects for 2009 - 10
Year 13 A2 subjects can be combined with AS levels and individual timetables are prepared for each student. Year 12 students can only study AS courses (with the exception of math’s accelerated students).

Choices
The option choices and subjects available are determined by the year 11 & 12 students in the previous academic year. Students can also re-sit I/GCSE subjects if needed.

Typically, students would choose 3 or 4 subjects only. Students also take part in PSHE (personal, social and health education) and PE lessons as well as being able to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award (International Award) up to the Gold level award.

Two years of study in the same subject leads to the full A level which is an internationally recognised standard for university entrance around the world, most overseas universities require 3 full A level passes. We have a dedicated universities coordinator to help students prepare for the next stage of their education.

Our sixth form students do have free lessons where they are expected to continue with independent studies, they may also use the newly furnished senior common room with refreshment and IT facilities.
