We believe that mathematics is a subject that all students can enjoy and in which all students can achieve a level of success. We aim to give our students a positive experience of learning mathematics so each individual can achieve their full potential.

athematics at St John’s is taught through a variety of teaching styles; through the use of games, puzzles and competitions; through the use of ICT technology; through the use of investigations and projects; and by encouraging students to work in groups as well as individually.

Key Stage 3

In Years 7, 8 and 9 students follow the English National Curriculum, with all lessons being taught in the style of the National Numeracy Strategy. Students are taught in set ability groups and work is studied from four main topic areas; number, algebra, shape and space, and data handling.

We follow the Edexcel GCSE Mathematics course, at all levels. The majority of our students enter the higher level exam. GCSE mathematics results at St John’s are consistently excellent. Our pass rate for grades A*-C in June 2009 was 100%, which, by far, exceeds the average in UK schools.

Our accelerated students take the GCSE Mathematics examination at the end of Year 10, one year ahead of their peers. In June 2009, every one of our accelerated students achieved a grade A* in the final GCSE examination. These students continue their studies by following the AS Mathematics with Statistics course in Year 11.

We also offer Edexcel GCSE Statistics. This is a popular option choice and students benefit greatly as work studied on this course can help them in future studies in areas such as geography, science, mathematics and business studies.

Key Stage 5

In Years 12 and 13, students study the Edexcel GCE AS and A2 Mathematics with Statistics courses. We also offer AS Further Mathematics for those students who wish to extend their knowledge further by learning Mechanics. These qualifications are part of the requirement for entrance into universities worldwide.
