Primary Year2

Welcome to Year Two.

The children in Y2 are in their final year within Key Stage One. Some of the work carried out throughout the year recaps on their understanding and skill development from their previous year’s education.

Towards the end of the year the students will be preparing to enter Key Stage Two, where the learning is less play based and the expectations of workload and presentation are different.

Within Y2 the children will take part in National Curriculum tests. These allow the school to assess the children’s learning in Literacy and Numeracy; as is carried out by schools in England.

Within Year Two we aim to:
  • Provide your child with a safe, happy and caring atmosphere;
  • Educate the ‘whole child’ through a practical approach to teaching and learning;
  • Offer a stimulating and challenging environment which encourages your child to become confident and independent learner;
  • Recognise that each child is an individual with different experiences; interests, abilities and needs and to address this when planning the curriculum;
  • Develop a partnership between home and school, carer and teacher for the benefit of the child.

Curriculum

Literacy

In Literacy the children follow an adapted version of the National Literacy Strategy form England. The children use a genre approach which is excellent for native English speakers and EAL students to acquire the rules of spoken and written English.

Numeracy

In Numeracy the children develop their counting skills, begin to describe and explain patterns and relationships involving numbers and shapes. They also develop their understanding of all four arithmetic operations.

Science

In Science the children develop their investigative and research skills through different topics: Plants and Animals; Health and growth; Variation; Grouping and Changing Materials; Forces and Movement; Using Electricity.
Encouraging a Theme based approach to teaching and learning, some of these topics are inter-linked to other areas of the curriculum.

Theme Studies / Topic

Within Theme Studies / Topic the foundation subjects: History; Geography; Art and design Technology; are where possible, combined to create a theme based approach.

In term one the theme is Beside the seaside, where the children compare seaside holidays now and in the past.

In term two the theme is The Great Fire of London, where the children study an event beyond living memory in British history with that of a famous person at that time, Samuel Pepys.

Information and Communication Technology

The children use the ICT suite where they are able to work on their drawing, mapping and writing skills, as well as learning how to access information using CD Roms. These skills are then reinforced during other lessons within the classroom.

Religious Education
The children study Christian stories; Buddhist stories; Places of worship; and Judaism through discussions and visual aids. All lessons are taught in an informal manner.

Personal, Social and Health Education

As for all other classes, PSHE lessons follow a weekly theme using the SEAL scheme of work. Each week the children will discuss and work on a weekly theme such as ‘New beginnings’, ‘Say no tobullying’ and ‘Relationships’.

Physical Education

In Year 2 the children begin to work in team situations. The teaching includes an awareness of fitness and health issues and developing the children’s awareness of how their bodies work.
In swimming they are taught to move more freely in the water, in a variety of ways with or without swimming aids.
